Clean yoga mat

Sep 02, 2020

The mat can be washed in the washing machine at 30 degrees. Always hang it on the line to dry so that shape, quality and colours are preserved for a long time. Do not put it in the tumble dryer!

Thanks to the microfibre surface made from recycled PET bottles, our mats are not only extremely non-slip, but also easier to clean and even machine-washable.

With the right care, however, you can significantly extend the life of the sustainable mats. Natural rubber yoga mats should not be soaked in water to prevent porous rubber. Nor should they be cleaned with aggressive chemical detergents or lots of soap, as this makes the mats slippery.

Cleaning in the washing machine

Put your yoga mat in the washing machine with a few drops of detergent at 30 degrees. The hand washing program is ideal. You can hang it over the clothesline to dry. Our mats are not allowed in the dryer. Tip: If the mat comes out of the machine dripping wet, you can first roll it up in the bathtub and squeeze it or dab it with a towel.

However, you should only carry out this type of cleaning infrequently to protect your mat. Usually it is sufficient to do one wash every two months if you clean your mat immediately after use. In this way, the shape, quality and colours are retained for a long time.

Cleaning with yoga mat spray

For a refreshment in between, you can spray the mat with a yoga mat spray and dab dry with a cloth. You can either buy a spray or create your own DIY yoga mat spray.

  • 40 ml odourless alcohol with 40% Vol

  • 3-5 drops of an essential oil of your choice, e.g. cinnamon (sensual), lavender (calming) or lemongrass (pleasantly fresh).

Mix all the ingredients in a spraying bowl. Spray bottles can be bought in drugstores, for example. A small bottle with a capacity of 100 ml is sufficient.

3 care tips for a long-lasting clean mat

Once clean, you want to keep your mat free of dirt for as long as possible. With the right routine before and after your yoga practice, you'll rarely need to clean your mat in the future and you'll also extend its life.

#1 Clean your yoga mat regularly

It is best to integrate wiping with a damp cloth directly into your yoga routine. This keeps sweat and skin particles from penetrating the surface.

#2 Don't be a muckraker

To keep your mat clean for a long time, a short self-cleaning before practice is essential. Wash your feet and hands before every yoga session. This way you prevent a lot of dirt from getting on the mat in the first place.

#3 Keep your mat rolled up

Seems logical, but is quickly forgotten in the hectic everyday life. And then the mat lies on the living room floor for days on end and becomes a dust catcher. So remember, you have less effort if you roll it up immediately after use.
